Frequently asked

How do I compare two job offers in Australia after tax?
Enter both gross annual salaries above. The calculator runs each through the same ATO PAYG brackets, Medicare levy, LITO, MLS and HECS rules for the selected financial year, and shows the dollar and percent difference in net take-home pay. Super is shown separately because it does not change net pay unless one offer is quoted including super.
Does a higher salary always mean more take-home pay in Australia?
Yes. Australia uses marginal tax brackets, the next dollar is taxed at a higher rate, not your whole income. A $5,000 raise from $80,000 to $85,000 adds about $3,500 to your take-home after PAYG and Medicare. You only lose money on a raise if the new offer is quoted including super and your old one was on top, or if you cross the Medicare Levy Surcharge cliff without hospital cover.
What financial year applies to a contract starting now?
The Australian financial year runs 1 July to 30 June. A contract starting partway through the year splits across two FYs, pick the year your full salary lands in for the most representative comparison.
Does this include salary sacrifice, bonuses or salary packaging?
No, this tool deliberately holds packaging settings equal so the difference shows the salary change alone. For salary sacrifice, RFB, bonuses or residency edge cases, use the full income tax calculator which has all of those toggles.
Does the Medicare Levy Surcharge apply to my offer comparison?
Only if you don't have private hospital cover and your income exceeds the threshold (single $101k / family $202k for 2025-26). Untick "Has private hospital cover" to model the impact, at $110k the surcharge adds $1,100/year on top of the standard 2% levy.
